As an independent contractor in construction, you are part of a very large – and growing – group of professionals.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the construction industry is one of the nation’s largest industry sectors, numbering almost 10 million people. Nearly 2 million of these are self-employed. In fact, the construction industry is an outstanding representative of American small business. Almost 65% of all construction companies employ no more than 4 persons. And more than 56% of all construction managers are self-employed.

While independent contractors in any industry enjoy the freedom of being their own boss, dictating their schedule and having increased flexibility in their career, there are increasing concerns that special interest groups and others have encroached on this freedom and are making it more and more difficult to be self-employed. That’s where we come in.

The Coalition for Independent Contractor Freedom (CFICF) is working to inform independent construction professionals – and the people who hire them – about the issues that threaten this working way of life and jeopardize an important business model.
